Los Amigos Park Stormwater Harvesting and Direct-Use Demonstration Project
APP is providing construction management services for this pilot project to capture urban runoff from an existing Los Angeles County 45-inch storm drain, store it underground, treat and reuse it for irrigation and sanitation purposes by a municipal park. Construction, which began in June 2016, is projected to continue until early 2017. The completed system will be able to harvest some 550,000 gallons of runoff per year for storage in a 53,500-gallon cistern underground. As needed, the water will be treated to irrigate the park and used in the public restrooms. Normally, the runoff would be treated and drain into Santa Monica Bay.
The project was made possible by the City and a grant provided by the Metropolitan Water District’s Foundational Actions Funding program for new and innovative supply technologies. This project could potentially serve as an example for other California cities seeking new sources of water.
